A lot of the applications were missing from the screens but could be found in the Application Manager. In most cases a re-install sorted that out but others remain in hiding no matter what. Oh, and everytime I boot the phone it attempts to install some apps which then fails. It doesn't say which ones and I don't know how to cancel this. The phone has never been the same since.
